Asperger syndrome , also referred to as Asperger 's, is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by substantial challenges in social interaction and nonverbal communication, as well as restricted and repetitive behavior patterns and interests. While it is a part of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is unique from other ASDs in that individuals with Asperger's generally have intact language and intelligence. As a type of pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger syndrome is identified by a combination of symptoms, rather than a single symptom. These symptoms are characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.
